I was lucky to meet Bernie in the 1980,s while he was touring in Japan with some mutual friends and from then on it was a long lasting friendship.
Judie,Bernie and Bassel invited me to stay with them in Plainfield and Judie and Bernie stayed with me in Tokyo.
He guided my son when he was learning the drums and my son Michael got to Jam with Bernie in Tokyo when he was only 13 years old and something he still talks about today..Bernie was not only a Musician but had a beautiful heart and Soul and think about him all the time..Until we meet again my friend X

Having the pleasure of growing up in Plainfield and as a youth following the works of Bernie, Bootsy, Funkadelic and Parliament. Hanging out at Steve's Record shop getting the latest and greatest of the P funk activities was very educational. We had our P funk study sessions almost on a daily bases. Certain things can not be said here. But the gifts Bernie and Funkadelic gave us will always hold a special place in our hearts as the music helped shape challenges we all had to face. Thank you Dr. Worrell.

Thank you, Dr. Worrell, for giving us your life. I have listened to your music since 1971 and nearly every day thereafter. I love you for that and your family for giving us you. I love your music so much for taking me through happy and sad times, times of success and through setbacks. My wish is to be buried with yours and Parliament Funkadelic's music. I hope my idea for Parliament Funkadelic music, including "Who's a Funkadelic," is one day realized so new generations are always exposed to it. Funkadelic music is love, joy, fun, political, insightful, and most all teaching, and Dr. Worrell's input, therein, is invaluable and immeasurable. When I was a kid, I always loved when you came to my hometown, Columbus, Ohio (though my beautiful mom did not understand you guys - lol). Love you, man...RIP...

RIP to a legend. Thank you for enriching my life with your music. We played the Pfunk as Dj's from a very young age and even before that, after school my friend and I would go through his brothers Parliament/Funkadelic collection in the very early eighties. I was always attracted to the way in which the music was created and some of the sounds were just out there. Your genius on the keyboards was responsible. Rest in Power. :-)

I had the extraordinary opportunity to work with Bernie the final 3 years of his life. We created several hours of music that is now coming out. The first album is released and available. The work we did is soulful and in the Native spirit. I really feel that we were drawn together and, I know that it propelled him in a different way. His generous spirit is all over this material and Www.khueex.com is where you can find it.

Bernie was a giant of American music and he will be sorely missed. I had the pleasure to meet him about 20 years ago and he was one of the nicest, down to earth people I've ever met. I've met other musicians I looked up to before and been disappointed but not with Bernie. He was all class and talent. I went to Nelson Ledges in June with the hopes of seeing him play again but it was not to be. I'll cherish the times I was lucky enough to see him perform. There will never be another like him. My condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences to the entire Worrell family and friends as well. I just found out about Mr. Worrell's passing today (8/23/16); I guess I've been hiding under a rock because not one word was mentioned about his death in the major media TV networks in NJ. It's a shame too because we all (my boys) knew that he was the glue that kept P-Funk together all those years. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Worrell in a dinner lounge on Broadway in NYC I believe in the early or mid 1990's; and when I saw a man who looked like him playing classical music with a tuxedo on, I had to ask him was he the one and only Bernie Worrell? He replied that he was, and I asked him why was he playing classical music in a dinner lounge and he replied something like this: "Because I need money like everyone else". I never forgot how this legend sounded playing Bach and right then and there I knew that this man was a genius. May I and I have mercy on his soul.

Respectfully,

From the 1970's funkateer

Bernie, rest in P for eternity. A most generous and gracious man.
GC may have been the conceptual wizard of P.Funk, but Bernie was the MUSICAL wizard, par excellence. Listen closely to the albums on headfones and find all the layers he put in there-- electric pianos, organ, melodica, grand piano, TOY piano. The long violin solo on Funkadelic's 'Adolescent Funk' is actually Bernie-- on synths!
Let's all hip the younger generations to his music so his artistry will be appreciated forever.

PFunk is a true American original creation that changed the world and is more than a musical genre, but a way of life. Most things build in incremental steps - but not PFunk. PFunk came out of nowhere, breaking all the rules and blowing up everything that had come before it. It also blew my mind and funked me up. I wasn't the only one. Far from it. None of this could have happened without the geniius, imagination and fearlessness of Bernie. Thank you Bernie and RIP.

Bernie Worrell got a hold of my musical mind at a very tender young age, turned it upside down, and shook it vigorously until the dust bunnies all fell out. Then he poured in his liquid light interplanetary funk-marinade elixir, sealed up the lid, gave it one more shake for good measure, and sent me on my way. I have never been the same. Nor has the world. Bernie Worrell was so influential that, like the fish who is unaware of the water in which she swims, most of the time we didn't even know he was there. And we simply cannot measure the impact that musical Titans like Bernie had on the shaping and education of our ears. P-Funk is among the most widely sampled musical entities in popular music's history. Their lyrics and beats and hooks and riffs and melodies are so commonly found at the heart of commercial radio hits that one could be forgiven for concluding that people decided to stop making new music after Pfunk came along. Because, why bother? No one could ever be funkier or more raw or more real than they got. And at the backbone of this massive musical assault on your D'VoidofFunk, no-dancin' ass were the dancing fingers and the luminous musical mind of one Bernie Worrell, the Wizard of Woo. Ride in Uhuru, Bernie. Thank you for everything, My Shining Guide through the Gaping Void.

Maybe it's not the time to say it-- or maybe it is exactly the right time to say it-- but, it's sad that so many of us have to turn to crowd funding to pay for medical treatment. There's something wrong here. We can do better-- one nation under a groove.

He really came to the fore on America Eats Its Young and as we know his musical influence took off greatly from there. I met him in Ballard Seattle a few years ago and that Jersey City kid came back as I gushed at meeting one of my heroes. That was the first real conversation. I actually first met him in 1975 in Norfolk when the Funks opened for Rufus and Chaka. So sad to find out about Bernie's illness last weekend, and now he's gone. A sad day for music! Living in Asheville, I got to see Bernie a lot in the last 15 years, thankfully! Whether with his Wizards of WOO, his Orchestra, or as a sideman to Steve Kimock [who's he? I went to see Bernie!], music director for Bootsy Collins, Special guest Uncle to Volts Per Octave. I even saw him at a screening of "Stranger" and asked him a question afterward! It was fully evident that this man and music itself, were inseparable; one and the same. He gave himself to music and became the medium for it to in turn enrich our lives in every kind of genre. Rest in Peace, Mr. Worrell and love and respect to his family and loved ones.

For the Departed:
O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and overthrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth.

For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

It's difficult to say goodbye to a mentor...A man who has influenced my style of play, my writing, and my soul for so many years....The master keyboardist, wizard and one of the true musical genius's behind the great Parliament-Funkadelic ground breaking funk opus, "KNEE-DEEP." 15 minutes of the most funky, soulful, melodic, most hypnotic chord progressions in music history.."The Freak of the Week!"
The Wizard of Woo totally slayed the keyboard tracks on this recording, and everything else he played....But in my humble opinion, no other funk offering will ever top KNEE DEEP! With George Clinton and Philipe Wynn....Knee Deep is one of the most sampled tracks in hip/hop lore....
He was brilliant! An incredible teacher...An "out of this world" pianist/keyboardist and composer....Bernie's hooks will be sung forever...And they should be...Rest with the ancestors now Bernie. After so many years of labor, you've earned this reward. Peace!

He and I grew particularly close, and he remained in contact with all the Momma Stud members throughout all these years. A true soul, that never stepped out of his spiritual boundaries, with absolute artistic integrity and his music reflected that. When Bernard played or sang, something happened to me on a cellular level, something new, his entire sound is the backbone of West Coast hip hop (ask Dre). My love goes out to Judy and Basil. It was a huge privilege to spend time with this kind, gentle, wonderful man in January 2011 at my friend Anthony Gemignani's music store All Star Music Academy in New Jersey. For almost an hour, Bernie Worrell took me on a personal journey through his career. It was meaningful not for the incredible stories and insight into the songs he helped shape and other great stories, but for how gentle and warm he was. He was such a humble man, driving himself to the interview, spending so much time with us, giving hugs generously, being a kind, decent dude. Bernie was among the most down to earth artists I've ever met, and so giving of his time. So kind and gentle. That is my overall memory; less about the content of our hour digging deep into his life in the funk, and more about the kind of man he was. Exemplary. He set the bar high and few if any have followed. God bless you, Bernie. Your death is so upsetting. It is just awful to know about. Be safe in Heaven, Bernie. Please say hi to my Mom and give her a hug for me. And my grandparents, too, please. I'll see you soon up there, my friend. Until then I am proud to sing your praises and tell people what a gentle spirit you truly are. All my love, Bernie. God bless you, you heroic man. Peace.

In 1979 the theme song of our partying "Senior Skip Day" was "Flashlight". The song was forever etched in my brain, played over and over that day.33 years later I found my self In a studio with Bernie as he was helping produce a good friends album. I was just helping push buttons and at a break he turned to me and asked what I thought of a certain part of the track we were working on. I have no idea what my response was... a bonafide legend was asking my opinion. The man who was responsible for my induction to funk. I wanted to pinch myself to be sure I was not dreaming. All I remember is bernie agreeing with what I said and making me feel important and a part of the process, not just a knob turner. A kinder, gentler spirit I have never met. I know he is meant for even greater things beyond this...thank your Bernie for sharing your talent and spirit with us. I hope you knew how special you are and how much you will be missed. Enjoy what is next!

I can't even describe how much I loved the sounds Bernie made. I saw him play with the Woo Warriors in Farmingdale NY about a decade ago and got to shake his hand. He was kind and humble. Over the years I saw him guide a new generation of funk in NYC with Deep Banana Blackout, Lettuce, Soulive, and other young musicians that looked to him as a forefather. Thank you Bernie. You are loved and missed already.

The day before his transition, I was suddenly moved to listen to Parliament's "Aqua Boogie" and "Theme From The Black Hole," particularly to hear Bernie's phat moog bass lines. Today I now believe my urge to hear those grooves was Dr. Worrell waving farewell before his ascension. Thank you so very much, dear BW, for enhancing my life of listening here on earth. Much Love and everlasting peace.

I had the pleasure of making Dr Worrell's acquaintance during the late '90's when he brought the Woo Warriors to NYC and played Knitting Factory. Although having seen him several times with P-Funk some 20 years previously, this was a more casual setting which allowed us a chance to speak at length. Dr Worrell was a perfect gentleman, even purchasing me a cocktail while he recounted personal stories of the road. As I was leaving, he stopped me saying he'd really enjoyed our conversation and wanted to give me a shirt. I still wear it to this day. The Man defined what it means to be a Class Act!

I used to bring Bernie to my school to talk and play with my students. He was so gracious to do it. So many memories from that experience. The best was the band I have with my students asked him to play Pharrell's "Happy". He didn't know the song but jammed anyway. He was amazing. I took a solo and quoted the jazz standard "Work Song". Bernie finished my quote. My best experience playing music in my life. Afterwards, Bernie asked me the name of the quote we both played! He was an encyclopedia of music. A true genius. I will miss you!
